Week #49 - The Nordic edition

TL;DR: I'm running a weekly newsletter with 5 songs and a short description, and a matching Spotify playlist if you want to subscribe.

For the non-Spotify readers, there is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover.

Hello everyone!

Public service announcements before we start:

I moved the newsletter to Substack. It's entirely transparent for you (and you don't need to do anything). The only change is the email you're receiving this email from, which is now freshnewsound@substack.com (if you want to whitelist it). The layout is also a bit nicer with in-line Youtube videos (and the editor is way less clunky than Mailchimp 🙂)

Back to the music!

Winter is almost here. Endless Greyness is back in the UK, and I'm off to (snowy) Scandinavia for a couple of days. Perfect mood for a fine selection of Scandinavian wintery acoustic metal tracks for your headphones. Some of them are pretty short, so I'm adding 3 more tracks this week.

Ulver - Østenfor Sol Og Vestenfor Maane ("East of the Sun and West of the Moon")

The mesmerising opening track of Ulver Norse folk album

Myrkur - Radmund

Amalie Bruun, aka Myrkur, goes back to her roots in these new versions of Scandinavian traditional songs played on traditional instruments such as mandolas, lyres and a nyckelharpa.

Dimmu Borgir - Sorgens Kammer ("Chamber of Sorrow")

Drudkh - Why the Sun Becomes Sad

The only non-Scandinavian song in this week's selection. Drudkh is a metal band from Ukraine that released a purely acoustic album arranged in the manner of traditional Ukrainian folk.

Heilung - Anoana

Heilung means healing. They describe their music as "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe". They use many instruments/objects from shamanic drums, reconstructed swords, human bones, throat singing and more.

In Flames - Pallar Anders Visa (The Ballad of Anders, the Thief)

Dissection - No Dreams Breed in Breathless sleep

The outro piano of Dissection masterpiece is a good relaxation track after an hour or the ragest black metal.

Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
