Hello everyone!

This Week’s Playlist - Season 2, episode 9.

I met Mathieu (aka Mathpromo) in 2003 on a music festival. We were both into French rock and French metal at the time, kept in touch, and started to write for a now-defunct music webzine in a pre-Youtube / pre-Instagram era. We are both huge Radiohead fans as well so we travelled across France together for a couple of their gigs (2008, 2012).

Once again, Mathieu has been another long time consistent curator for some of my music tastes.

And in addition of Mathieu’s picks, another 5 songs I discovered thanks to him. Stay tuned after his feature.

See you next week.

TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.

There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:

  • Spotify

  • Apple Music

  • Youtube Music

  • Tidal (coming soon)

  • Deezer (coming soon)

Guest of the week: Mathpromo

Rather than throwing at you 5 unrelated titles, I preferred to make a selection of the post punk scene which has seen a remarked resurgence in the recent years.

Directly influenced by 70s/80s punk, 90s noise, bands like Public Image Ltd, Sonic Youth, At the Drive In, post punk came back to the fore in the mid-2010s with bands like Idles, Shame, Girl Band, Sleaford Mods.

It's also very interesting to see these groups evolve over time. Like this incredible live session "From The Basement" by IDLES, the latest less angry album "Skinty Fia" by Fontaine D.C....

I would have also been able to tell you about Viagra Boys, Yard Act, Wu Lu, Black Country New Road, Squid, Black Midi or the more mainstream Wet Leg.

Another time :-)

In short, it's a very active scene with lots of excellent bands!
