This Week's Playlist #54 - Guest feature: Ashley L

freshnewsound.substack.com

TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week. I will have a different guest each week, with very different tastes (in an admirable way) who will be sharing 5 songs they love. And then 5 songs from me of what I’ve been listening to lately, in the same style than we’re used to:-)

There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:

  • Spotify

  • Apple Music

  • Youtube Music

  • Tidal (coming soon)

  • Deezer (coming soon)

Hello everyone!

First and foremost, happy 2023 :-)

2nd episode of the year, with a new guest. This time, a colleague from my last job, who has much geeky pop music taste than my heavy metal one :-)

I hope you will enjoy.

Guest of the week: Ashley L

Hello all,

I’m Ashley. Nice to meet you.

Thomas and I met each other working together and he recently left me (I mean us! ) behind for pastures greener. I’m not sad, though! Very pleased that he’s moving on to do bigger and better things. But I was super honoured when he asked me to guest in his music newsletter.

I’m an American living in the UK; originally from Houston, Texas. So, you could say that my music taste is a little all over the place because I have been. I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you all my top 5 standout songs of 2022. These were all released over the last year so if you find yourself in a music rut and craving something fresh, hopefully, these will ease you out of it.

I hope you all enjoy.

  • Metric - All Comes Crashing

An incredible comeback for Noughties Canadian band Metric. We loved them on the dancefloor then just as much as we love them now.

  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Burning -

Another scene band resurrected; NYC-based Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back again with an exciting sound that is perfectly modern yet unmistakably them.

  • The Snuts - Hallelujah Moment -

An absolute earworm from Scottish band The Snuts. It’s as if BTS had a lovechild with early Arctic Monkeys. A weird dream but a dream nonetheless.

  • Lime Cordiale, Idris Elba - Apple Crumble -

A wild smash of Aussie pop-rock duo Lime Cordiale and world-famous actor Idris Elba. It’s hilarious, stupid, and boasts an incredible pop hook. If one song isn’t enough, they’ve recorded 6. You’re welcome.

  • Black Honey - Heavy -

This is the first band I had the pleasure of seeing live post-pandemic and they did not disappoint. Brighton-based Black Honey as the name suggests is sugary sweet thanks to Izzy Baxter Phillips’ neo-Blondie vocals and the rest is straight-up-in-your-face rock. Bonus points - their music video for “Heavy” stars drag queen Dakota Shiffer of RPDR UK fame and is a gorgeous retro feast.

🎧 What I’ve been listening this week

  • Witch Fever - Slow Burn

  • A Perfect Circle - Orestes

  • Max Richter - On the Nature of Daylight

  • Gold Panda - Time Eater

  • Tweaker - ruby (featuring Will Oldham)

Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
